New Academy Award best popular movie category causing controversy



The Academy Award best popular movie category is causing controversy. Actor Rob Lowe took to Twitter to express his opinion, tweeting "Seriously, this 'best pop movie' category is the worst idea the Academy has had since they asked me to sing with Snow White." 

According to Variety, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made changes Wednesday to the awards in an attempt to increase ratings. 

The Academy issued a clarification later Wednesday that films would be eligible for both the best picture and the new popular film category and not one or the other.
