Karen Carpenter sings "Close to You"
Unbelievably talented vocalist Karen Carpenter was lost far too soon. Karen sang with her brother Richard to form the duo The Carpenters. Karen died due to her struggle with anorexia, which was little known at the time. She passed away on February 4, 1983, at 32-years-old in Downey, California. Her death led to more awareness of eating disorders.
The siblings' musical journey is captured in the documentary "Close To You: The Carpenters."
Lyricist John Bettis talked about the only talent she resisted- her reluctance to perform. He said getting her out from behind the drums was a pain. However, her great voice led her to take on the spotlight and sing without an instrument.
