What causes and charities are near and dear to celebrities? This is a list of stars' charitable work. Celebrities are passionate about these causes.

Nelson Mandela, Deceased: Ending Apartheid

Nelson Mandela inspired the world. According to the AP, Mandela spent about a third of his life, or 27 years in prison for his battle against apartheid in South Africa. After he was released from prison he spoke about forgiveness. Mandela was elected president in 1994. Nelson Mandela died December 5th at 95 years old. He advocated a message of peace and forgiveness.

Angelina Jolie:  Humanitarian Causes

Angelina Jolie shows extraordinary service to refugees. According to UNHCR, or  the U.N. Refugee Agency, in 2001 Jolie became a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. In 2012, she was named Special Envoy for UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The star has completed 40 field missions to remote areas on behalf of displaced people. She has donated more than $5 million to the organization since 2001. She supports disaster relief, vulnerable children, conservation, and the battle for justice. During an interview, Jolie expressed helping others is helping her deal with her past. 

Brad Pitt: Humanitarian Causes, Disaster Relief

Angie isn't the only one in on the action. Brad Pitt co-founded the Make It Right Foundation in 2007. The celebrity and the foundation donated more than $24 million for Hurricane Katrina survivors. According to Make It Right, the organization "builds homes, buildings and communities for people in need."

Bill and Melinda Gates: Medical Research, Battling Hunger and Poverty

Bill and Melinda Gates have made major contributions to medical research and health programs. Bill Gates made the largest charitable contribution ever when he gave $10 billion for childrens' vaccines. Bill and Melinda are co-chairs for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which made more than a half billion dollar donation for health programs. The foundation battles hunger and poverty in developing countries. In the United States, they work to make sure people with the least resources are afforded opportunities. Their organization is guided by the belief that every life has equal value.
