Fans celebrate the 25-year-anniversary of the Apollo 13 movie and 50 years since the real-life Apollo 13 mission. According to AMC, the Apollo 13 film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Ron Howard directed the movie. The film stars Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, and Gary Sinise.
Tom Hanks played astronaut Jim Lovell. Bill Paxton portrayed Fred Haise, Kevin Bacon was Jack Swigert and Gary Sinese portrayed Ken Mattingly.
According to the Apollo 13 movie, Ken Mattingly got the measles and had to be replaced by Jack Swigert on the mission. According to the National Air and Space Museum, it was planned as a lunar landing mission. The mission was aborted after 56 hours because of a loss of oxygen and electrical power.
