Laxatives and an airport scan put a serious kink in a would-be smugglers plan. According to the AP, a man swallowed 220 diamonds valued at 2.3 million dollars. The 25-year-old man was arrested by South African police.
The man swallowed the polished diamonds to try to get them out of the country. Officials arrested the man Tuesday night in a security line at O.R. Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg. South African Police Service Captain Paul Ramaloko said a body scan showed the diamonds. They were later recovered. The smuggler was traveling to Dubai.
Officials think the 25-year-old is part of a smuggling ring because another man was arrested in March in a similar incident.
Other news outlets report authorities supplied a laxative to the 25-year-old to recover the 220 diamonds. The future diamond pooper's plan was foiled.
South Africa is a world leader for diamond production.
