Say it isn't so! Game of Thrones will end after season eight. There's been speculation the show would last until then but now it's official. According to US Weekly, HBO Programming chief Casey Bloys confirms the news at TCA executive session in LA on Saturday July 30, 2016. Bloys said showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have a specific plan about the number of seasons they should do. Bloys said he would take ten more seasons, but the executive producers have an idea about how they can make the best show possible. Season seven is set for for seven episodes. Its unclear how many episodes season eight will contain. Season seven is scheduled to return in the summer of 2017, not the typical April premiere. This means Game of Thrones won't be eligible for the 2017 Emmy Awards. :(
